Discover the Benefits of Stretching from a Sports Massage Therapist – Nov 9, 2014

We’ve all experienced physical pain at some point in our lives. When we incur an injury to some part of our body, we know it’s a signal to our body that something is wrong. But what is really going on under the surface? Why do we experience pain when we think an injury has gone away? What is compensation really all about? Also, a majority of us don’t stretch… ok, almost all of us! But what’s the big deal about stretching? Can’t we just warm up our body and begin an activity and be fine? In this workshop we will talk about the physiology of pain and its effect on our muscles. We will also talk about mechanisms of injuries, including muscle strain, tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis, degenerative disc disease and disc herniations. We will also talk about posture and the importance of stretching, strengthening, and some of the things you can do to help your body in recovery from injury.

Eliza Desmarais is a Registered Sports Massage Therapist. She recently moved back to Digby County after spending over 13 years in Montreal, Quebec pursuing her career in Sports Massage Therapy. During that time, she worked extensively with professional athletes including Olympic athletes in various divisions, NHL players, members of the Alpine ski team, Grand Ballets Canadiennes dancers, Cirque du Soleil artists, IMPACT soccer players, and various marathon runners and running groups. Her experience with these groups has lead her to a great understanding on the biomechanics of injury, and the physiology of recovery.
