Award-winning bodhrán player Jacob McCauley is back in Bear River this Saturday (June 8th) to host the first of a two workshop series. This will be a double workshop starting with a two hour beginner workshop and then a two hour intermediate/advanced workshop. Please see the poster for times, location and cost. No experience is necessary for the beginner workshop, however you must bring your own drum (tippers will be for sale). Folks are also welcome to do both workshops as a package.
A second set of workshops will take place during the day on July 13th to coincide with an evening concert of the trio Nua at the King’s Theatre in Annapolis Royal. There will also be workshops on fiddle and guitar taught by James Law (fiddle) and Graeme McGillivray (guitar) who are fellow members of NUA.
The beginner workshop on June 8th will start from the ground up with the basics on technique, essential rhythms, common tune types, musical analysis as well as the history of the drum. There will be emphasis on learning and practicing the basic strokes, rhythms and learning the most most common tunes played in sessions with one-on-one guidance.
The Intermediate/Advanced workshop will challenge the more advanced players with less common tune types, odd-time signatures, advanced sticking techniques, ornamentation, back-hand use as well as tasteful tune accompaniment. Students will be given the opportunity to play together as a group and receive one-on-one instruction while practicing new tunes and tricks.
