Karen Phillips-Curran: A Journey Through Family History in Photography

Throughout her residency at ARTSplace in Annapolis Royal, Karen Phillips-Curran will be exploring, alternative photography using the tiny black and white, unnamed photos, from her grandfather Henry’s, photography album.

“On those soft black papered pages, I discover people who were indeed related, but who I never will meet. These images from 100 years ago haunted me upon close examination. I found familiar faces throughout. For this residency I’m using his photos, combined with different alternative photographic processes, to enhance their animation with the context of the past and present. In some cases to create a moving image.”

I’ve been a working artist all my life and now,at 70 the twists and turns of my practice are reflected in the images I create. Using Polaroid emulsion, small images captured in time, I delve into a deep personal history of my family.
