ABOUT MARILYN PREUS

Marilyn started sewing as a child in Alberta and has had a lifelong interest in textiles. In 1969, she earned a night school diploma in women’s clothing design while attending McGill graduate school in Montreal.
After a career as a Ph.D. Clinical Geneticist at McGill and Memorial Universities, she studied civil and common law at McGill and qualified for the Quebec and Nova Scotia Bar.

She felt unsettled. During this time, she spent the warm months at her husband Clarke Fraser’s ancestral home in Bear River. There, she launched into serious, hands-on renovations. During the Montreal winters of 1997-98, she developed her skills with art courses at the Saidye Bronfman Centre.

Montreal was exciting, but the solitude and beauty of Bear River proved even more alluring. Marilyn would have the chance to fully embrace her creativity. It would be tactile and all about silk. Her collection of silk remnants from used clothing stores grew. In 1999, she moved to Bear River. There, she designed her first quilt. Two years later she showed eight pieces at ArtsPlace in Annapolis Royal, N.S. Her show “Silk Journey” captivated its audience by veering from the common perception of quilts into the bold.

Some of her various works have been shown at the Mary E. Black Gallery in Halifax. Her works are in private collections across Canada, the U.S., and England.

For the past 25 years, quilting in Bear River has accompanied Marilyn’s intellectual, artistic, and spiritual journey.

And Bear River Artworks Gallery is thrilled to host this resulting show.
