I’m really excited to announce that I’m starting a music program for youth in Bear River.
Inspired by the amazing work Kim Barlow has done with Music In Communities in Canning and surrounding areas for the last 5 years, I felt a keen lacking where we live for our youth to have opportunities to create and collaborate peer to peer in music.

I’ve been taking my daughter Soul to The Ross Creek Annex over the last 9 months, since learning about their Youth Open Mics and Youth Music Drop-Ins. It’s been so creatively inspiring for her, as well as a fantastic place to meet peers who also have a passion for music. It’s also opened up so many wonderful opportunities for her to network and perform.
This has inspired me to want to bring those opportunities locally.
I am introducing YIMI. The Youth In Music Initiative.

The program will be starting in October and will consist of weekly Youth Drop-in Music Jam’s and monthly Youth Open Mic performances.
The Open Mics will also be open to the community and all who wish to watch our local youth perform.
The program is open to all Youth ages 12 to 18, and we will have some various instruments available for youth to use at the events, most of which are wonderfully being provided by The Yarmouth Music Room.
The Music Jam will be a $10 drop-in fee or $100 for all 11 events between October and December. The Open Mic nights will be free for performers, and a suggested donation fee of $15 for others. The fees are to offset our space rental and facilitators pay.

We will be starting up again in January and plan to run until Spring Break for our second session and then thereafter until June for the final session . All events will be at The Oakdene, our beautiful community Centre in Bear River.

Thanks so much, and I look forward to meeting all who come to participate.
In music and peace,
